With differences remaining between the House and Senate --- and a possible veto by Gov. Charlie Crist looming --- an overhaul of Florida's Medicaid system will not pass this year, legislative leaders said Sunday.
"It looks like major reform isn't going to happen this year,'' said Rep. Dean Cannon, a Winter Park Republican who has been a House leader on the issue.

On Thursday, Congress approved legislation (HR 4851) that would temporarily extend unemployment benefits, including subsidies to help purchase COBRA coverage, and delay a scheduled cut to Medicare physician payments.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has told Aetna Inc. that unless it revamps its Medicare drug policies by April 21, it will not be allowed to market Medicare prescription coverage.

After the provision to delay the reduction expired at midnight on March 31, Medicare doctors will face a 21.2% pay cut again.
However, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has stepped in buying doctors more time. According to a news outlet, the Government has ordered that claims which are submitted on or after April 1 will be held for an extra 10 days until Congress can return from recess.

H.R. 4851 proposes to postpone a 21% Medicare fee reduction and extend other programs. The measure has already passed the U.S. House of Representatives and has gone before the Senate. The Senate adjourned for a two week break without voting on the measure, which resulted in the cuts going into effect on April 1st. The Senate is reconvenes and is scheduled to vote on the Bill TODAY, April 12th.
