After weeks of partisan and intraparty tussling, Congress resolved - at least for now - the Medicare physician payment problem. With doctors increasingly critical of a 21 percent cut in Medicare reimbursements that went into effect this month, the House Thursday accepted the temporary 'fix' passed by the Senate last week.

Doctors would be temporarily spared a 21 percent cut in Medicare payments under a bill passed by Congress Thursday evening.

The measure would delay the cuts six months while lawmakers work on a more permanent solution. The bill now goes to President Barack Obama for his signature.

In a surprise turnabout, coming the day after it had rejected the same measure, the US Senate reached a last-minute deal today to delay a planned 21.3% Medicare fee cut for 6 months. The legislation also provides a 2.2% payment increase.
