Think You Can’t Afford an EMR? Guess What...You’re Already Paying For It!

In our efforts to help physicians make the transition to electronic medical records, we talk to 100s of physicians and office managers. A common theme from many of these meetings, especially from the 1 or 2 doctor practices, is “I can’t afford an EMR!” or “I’m going to buy an EMR for $1,000.” Neither of these schools of thought is sustainable because in most cases the practice is already paying for the cost of an EMR through office workflow and other inefficiencies and $1,000 is not going to get the practice an EMR that will meet all of the meaningful use requirements from a company that will be in business 5 years from now.

Health plans consider adding "meaningful use" criteria in physician contracts

As the government enters the final stages of defining what it means for physicians to be meaningful users of electronic medical records, it appears that the financial implications for not meeting that definition are likely to affect more than Medicare pay.

Private insurers are latching onto the government's meaningful use definition to bolster their own efforts to promote EMR use and possibly impose their own financial penalties for nonuse among contracted physicians, according to the author of a new study looking at the challenges physicians face with meeting meaningful use.
