A diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease, Dr. Sanchez is also a member of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, Society of Nuclear Medicine and the American College of Physicians.

This is not the first time Dr. Sanchez has purchased an EHR system for his practice, Batey Cardiovascular & Vein Center. The first system he purchased was a “template based nightmare” and to top it all off it had to be hosted on his own server – a feature Dr. Sanchez was not happy with as it meant reoccurring costs of updating and replacing the server every few years.

“I liked the fact that Aprima is a web-based system and I have local back-up. I don’t have to keep upgrading a server every few years,” says Dr. Sanchez.

So why take on the time and expense of implementing a new system now? “I’ve been practicing medicine a long time. Buying the Aprima system from DAS is a business decision,” says Dr. Sanchez. He wants to streamline his practice. Right now his staff spends an enormous amount of time scanning superbills all day. They want statements sent out automatically, better record-keeping and outpatient access.

“Other EHRs are template based. You can’t dictate. They don’t interface or have billing. With Aprima, I like the fact we have the ability to keep our current culture and practice. We can still dictate and do our own billing.”

Efficiency in scheduling was another motivating factor. With four providers and four different calendars, keeping track and organizing each physicians calendar was getting out of control. With Aprima everything can be managed from one central location.

Having CEO David Schlaifer directly involved meant a lot to Dr. Sanchez. “It’s unique to have someone like him go out in the field to help his team sell the product. You know there is a commitment there, someone you can talk to if there is a problem,” says Dr. Sanchez.

Batey Cardiovascular and Vein Center was converted to Aprima from Misys Tiger and EMR.

What is your Return on EHR?

There are several components to calculating your return on investment (ROI).

There is a revenue side, allowing you to capture charges more accurately, code correctly and reduce payor rejections. There also exist many expense savings, including reduced paper supplies, transcription costs, space savings, and staff efficiency.

If you look at the ROI only as a physician, you may miss the ROI available to you as a business owner… remember, in many cases you are BOTH.
